Virgin of the Remedies

Mexico (1519)

The Virgin of the Remedies is the oldest image  venerated in Mexico, brought \by a soldier of Hernan  Cortés during the Conquest.

It reached Mexican soll in 1519 with Juan Rodriguez  de Villafuerte, from Basque, Spain, as guardian of his  journey. It was in Veracruz where he presided over the  first Mass in Mexico. Many Mexican cities have taken  her as their patron.

After the statue was buried in that place, in 1540 the  Indian leader Juan Tovar, on Totoltepec hill, had a vision in which the bright Virgin Mary urged him to rescue her forgotten image. He told  his story to the Franciscans but it wasn’t until an Indian died in a factory accident that the image was found buried. Tovar reverently took the small image home where it became an object of devotion.
