Mary of Schiavonea

Italy (1648)

On the night of August 23, 1648, as he watched the sea in the vicinity of the Church of San Leonardo and the Tower of the Dark, a knight Antonio Ruffo had a vision of the Blessed Virgin.

She appeared sitting on a seat on the sea, with arms  outstretched, calmed the astonished man and declared  herself to be the Madonna of Schiavonea. Then she  asked him to commission a painting in her likeness for  devotion to her. Our Lady repeated her appearance two more times before he believed and provided what she requested. He appointed a painter Scamardella to paint a portrait of the Virgin Mary as she appeared. For several years, the painting was kept in the church of San Pietro in Corigliano, but in 1648 it was transferred to the  church of St. Leonard, in the  area of the Dark, which is now Schiavonea.
