Mary Comforter of the Afflicted

Mettenbuch, Germany (1876)

Between December 1 and 21, 1876, the Blessed Virgin Mary reportedly appeared to 4 children, NC Kraus, Francisco Javier Kraus, Teresa Sack Liebl and Matilda, ages eight to fourteen. Occasionally the Infant Jesus, Saint Joseph and angels all were reported to appear. These events were recorded in detail by the pastor and the bishop of Regensburg Ignatius Senestrey. The latter, however, distanced himself from the apparitions and decided to suspend the investigation but later a chapel was built to enshrine the image of the Virgin. The apparitions are reported during Advent and Christmas, and so while she was named “Comforter of the Afflicted,” she was later called by the people as “Mother of God of Advent.”
