Valaam Icon of the Mother of God
Heinavesi, Finland (1878)
According to the inscription, the wonder-working icon of the Mother of God of Valaam was painted in 1878, “the work of monks of Valaam.”
Originally, the icon was to have been placed in the Valaam Monastery’s Church of the Dormition. This never occurred and subsequently the icon was misplaced.
In 1897, the icon was rediscovered and gained its miracle-working reputation after a succession of Marian visions experienced by an eldery woman Natalia serious arthritis.
In 1987, an annual Orthodox feast was established on August 20 (August 7 on Julian).
The Julian calendar is a former calendar introduced by Julius Caesar in 46 BC and used in most of the Christian world.
