Our Lady with the Silver Foot

Toul, France (1284)

On September 20, 1284, shortly before midnight,   Helwide began dozing, while praying to the Virgin  to console her of the recent death of her husband and her daughter when Our  Lady appeared to her, and ordered her to go immediately to find a man named Rimbert, who was the guardian of the entrance to the city, to warn about an enemy proposed to enter the city by the door to set their homes on fire and fill the streets with blood. As  a sign her foot in the statue would be exposed under her  garment. When she went to tell others they mocked her  until they saw for themselves the statue reveal her foot.

To perpetuate the memory and recognize the protection  granted to them by the Blessed Virgin Mary, the  people of Toul had a shoe of pure silver made to cover the statue’s foot.
