Our Lady of Victory

San Marco la Catola, Italy (13th c.)

The mosaic icon of Blessed Virgin Nicopeja in the  basilica of St. Mark in Venice, Italy, dates around the reign of Emperor John Comnenus. The sacred icon was carried into battle to bring the bearer good fortune.

Madone Nicopeja, as she is popularly known, is the  protectress of the city and the people. An enlarged  replica of the original is enshrined in St. Peter’s chapel of St. Mark's.

The Festival of Saint Liberatus Martyr and Our Lady of Victory is celebrated  on August 19th. For the feast the statue of Our Lady of Victory is processed  through the streets of San Marco La Catola. The town is adorned with lights and fireworks displays can be seen in the evening.
