Our Lady of the Way

Leon, Spain (1505)

Tradition has it that a captain, very devoted to the Virgen del Camino, was a native of Villamanan which was seized by the Moors. The Moor who had locked him captive every night in an ark, shackled him with chains at night for fear that he might escape, and kept forcing him to deny his faith.

One night, the villagers, hearing the bells and not knowing what was happening, were terrified. All went to church, preceded by the priest and found the Moor and Christian sitting in the ark, a miracle worked by the Virgin.
The Moor converted to Christianity and the ark and the chain were kept inside the old sanctuary, which were venerated by the faithful. Today they can be seen in the new sanctuary in the room to the left of the image of the Virgin.
