Our Lady of the Miracle 2

Lima, Peru (1630)

The Franciscan friars who accompanied the Conquest to Peru hung an image of the Immaculate Conception on their first church in Lima.

On missionary journeys, they would take the image “La Misionera.” They were in Cusco, the Inca capital, in 1536 when, during the rebellion, natives trapped many Spaniards in a hut and set fire to the roof.

La Misionera was seen to appear above the building together with Santiago. The fire ceased, and all were saved. In honor of this event a church was built on site. On November 27, 1630, an earthquake struck the city. The image of Our Lady turned in the direction of the Blessed Sacrament and the earthquake stopped. On June 19, 1953, the papal nuncio crowned the miraculous statue. The feast is November 27th.
