Our Lady of the Milk
St. Augustine, FL, USA (16th c.)
When Spaniards founded the oldest city in the United States, St. Augustine, Florida in 1565, they brought with them from Madrid a statue of Nuestra Senora de la Leche (Our Lady of the Milk) in the style of the Virgo Lactans (The Breastfeeding Virgin). In 1765, this statue was lost at sea along with other religious articles when England took Spanish Florida as its own colony. When the Spaniards returned in 1783, the devotion to Our Lady under this title flourished. In 1938, a second copy of the original statue in Spain was created in its place.
Many miracles have been reported, especially from couples struggling with infertility who seek out Our Lady’s assistance and later are blessed with children.
