Our Lady of the Grotto

Lamego, Portugal (6th c.)
Our Lady of the Grotto is very popular in Portugal, Spain, Italy and on the island of Malta. At Lamego, Portugal, during the construction of a chapel dedicated to the Blessed Mother being hollowed out of the rock, an image of the Blessed Virgin had been found, and hence the name Nossa Senhora da Gruta (Our Lady of the Grotto).
The sanctuary is now an integral part of the panorama of the city to which it is united by a scenic stairway.
Since 1984, the shrine including the staircase and park are classified as a place of public interest.
