Our Lady of Kazan 2

Russia (1579)

On July 8, 1579, the Mother of God appeared three  times to a ten year old girl, Matrena, inviting her to  look under the rubble of a destroyed house. The girl  was not believed, not by the archbishop, the clergy, nor the authorities, so alone with her mother, she began to dig in the earth in the  place indicated until the icon was found, wrapped in old  rags, and absolutely intact. The news soon spread in  the city and the archbishop  himself went to the place of  discovery. On the day of the “discovery” two blind men, Joseph and Nikita regained their sight. The holy icon was given the highest stature within the Russian Orthodox Church, representing the Virgin Mary as the protector and patroness of the city of  Kazan and was considered a palladium of Russia until its theft and likely destruction  in 1904.
