Our Lady of Happy Voyage

Bandel, West Bengal, India (1599)

The Portuguese built a Church in 1599, less than two decades after establishing their settlement in Bandel de Hoogly, close to Calcutta in eastern India. It was dedicated to Nossa Senhora do Rosario, also known as “Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem”, meaning “Our Lady of the Good Voyage”. In 1632 the Moghul Emperor Shah Jehan attacked and destroyed the settlement including the church. A year later he allowed the colony to be rebuilt and gifted land to the local Christians. The Church now stands as the Basilica of Our Lady of Bandel. A ship’s mast in front of the Church was donated by the Captain of a vessel that was saved by the Virgin from a storm in the Bay of Bengal. The feast of Holy Rosary is celebrated on the 2nd Sunday of November and Our Lady of Happy Voyage on the 1st Sunday of May.
