Our Lady of Graces

Torcoroma, Colombia (1711)

On this day in the highlands of northeastern Colombia,  the people of Ocana celebrate Our Lady of  Graces, whose image appeared over 300 years ago beneath the bark of a tree. A mestizo named  Cristobal Melo maintained nearby a sugar mill and small farm, in which he worked with his son. In 1709 he went in the mountains to find a log to make a trough. After selecting the wood,  Cristobal removed the bark and saw formed in low relief in the sapwood an image of Our Lady in the form of the Immaculate Conception that became known to be miraculous. The annual fiesta features masses, music, and a procession. During the tricentennial celebration on August 16, 2011, Our Lady’s image was pontifically crowned.
