Our Lady of Cabeza
Jaen, Spain (1227)
A shepherd named Juan Alonso Rivas, was tending his herds on the hills of Sierra Morena near the summit. He was a simple and fervent Christian, with a completely paralyzed left arm. The lights at night on the mountain near where he had his herd began to catch his attention along with the ringing of a bell. Finally on the night of August 11, 1227, he reached the summit.
Amidst the rocks, he found a small image of the Virgin, in whose presence the shepherd knelt and prayed aloud in dialogue with Our Lady who wanted to place a temple there. He went back to the city to announce the event and show everyone the recovery of his arm, thus giving credence to his words. The temple was finally built between 1287 and 1304 on the summit.
