Mother of God of Rozancowa
Krakow, Poland (1600)
In the Dominican Basilica of Trinity in Cracow I a chapel delicated to the Mother of God of the Rosary.
The icon crowned on October 2, 1921, is a copy of the ancient Roman “Salus Populi Romani” image, brought by Cardinal Maciejowski from Rome to Cracow in 1600.
The original image was instrumental in the defeat of the Turks in 1571. The image in Cracow played a part in the “Polish Lepanto” in1621, when at Khotyn, Ukraine an allied force of Poles, Lithuaians, and Ukraini faced an Turkish army twice its size. On October 3, the bishop of Krakow led an hours long procession with the holy icon. The entire population joined in.
The Turkish gave up their attack and signed a treaty.
The feast is celebrated in Cracow on the first Sunday of October.
