Mary Most Holy
Capo d’Orlando, Italy (1598)
The story goes that in the night of October 22, 1598, the Raffa brothers were guarding the castle on Cape Orlando when they heard a noise. They saw a man sound a horn and run away, leaving behind a small box.
Inside it the watchmen found a statuette of the Madonna and Child. On October 22, 1600, the image was installed in a new sanctuary on the mountain, where for centuries the Virgin watched over the Cape and protected it from earthquakes, storms, and pirates. In 1925, after the original was stolen, a silver replica was substituted. The region celebrates October 22 with a pilgrimage to the sanctuary and procession through the streets.
