Our Lady of the EarthQuake

Paterno, Italy (1857)
In the evening of December 16, 1857 a terrible earthquake struck the population of Basilicata and neighboring regions. On the next day, the residents of Paterno decided to bring in procession the statue of the Madonna del Carmine in the streets of the country.
Legend has it that as soon as the procession reached the present district Marsh, in front of the destroyed houses and carts full of corpses, Mary turned her face, and her eyes shed tears of blood. The miraculous event is commemorated every year on December 17.
