Our Lady of Mongui

Boyaca, Colombia (16th c.)
Highly venerated, the Virgin of Mongui, is the patroness of Boyaca. The story goes that when King Charles I of Spain retired from his throne, went to the monastery of Yuste to prepare for death. He went looking for painted works of the Virgin Mary to send to the New World.
In 1558, his son King Philip II sent two paintings: one of St. Martin was for the leader of Mongui, and another of the Holy Family, for Sogamoso. Although the works were marked, the destinations were reversed. The inhabitants of Sogamoso protested and asked for the exchange. But the pictures inexplicably returned to the same places and the swap could not be done. They thought it was a miracle and let the images stay in place.
