Our Lady of Cravegna

Italy (1492)

In 1486, some pious women of Cravegna, collected alms to create a Virgo Lactans image on the wall of the church.

On December 20 1493, the sacristan of the church of San Giulio, Lorenzo di Francesco di Giovan grande, noticed that during the hour of vespers lasting 16 hours, the image of the Madonna started to emit tears from both eyes and the face was flooded. The same occurred on the right eye of the Child.

The entire face and other exposed parts of the figure of the Madonna and Child appear then as blankets of fresh sweat. The event lasted the next two days. Even though everything else was frozen in the cold weather, the tears flowing out of the sacred image did not freeze.
